There's a time to run, and a time to face reality. In the novels "Song of Solomon"... In "The Things They Carried", a war soldier must gradually come face to face with the harsh memories of a war long past,

Structure -- Acyclical vs straightforward ( though in chunks) one due to author's craft, other due to allotment of weekly.

However, sentence structure - Obrian posed succinct responses with little room for ambiguous detail. Morrison, however, made every detail key, keeping the reader on their repective toes for looking into deeper meanings. After spending nearly the entire novel tracing the roots of milkman's paternal grandparents, it is assumedly revealed that Jake, the name called out during the "Sugaman/Solomon/Shalamair" song, was the last son of Solomon whom jumped. This would mean that one of his Grandfather Solomon's children would turn out to be his Mother's father - whom leapt from the building at the start of the novel. She unknowingly married her uncle.

Symbolism - Kiowa in the shit, vs Milkman's namesake,  "Flight" vs "Stories"

Theme - Both twist the truth to make life liveable, but keept the stories and heritage alive, not matter how grim the details may be.

It takes a lot of courage to remiesce of the death of Kiowa - whom succumbed under a field full of shit. It's not a pretty story to tell, but its the truth of the matter, and Obrien does a masterful job at retelling the events with compassion and fortitutde for his lost comrade. There is a sense of losing yourself if the stories can't get out. In the example of " " whom bottles his emotions up, he finally hangs himself under the strain of "". Similarly, Jake, the insurance claims adjuster cannot take his burdens, and " ". IN doing so he frees himself.
